Hello Magnolia Families,

If you’ve been in Magnolia Classroom lately you’ll notice that we’re learning about all things RAINBOW!

Plus, we’ve had some fun filled family visits, continued working on our solar system model and have learned lots of new words that we’ve learned about color theory. Please enjoy some highlights from the last few weeks!

Some important reminders:

• Friday May 10th is a Professional Development Day for Teachers, and we will have a half day schedule. Magnolia Dismissal will be from 11:55a-12:05p at our door on Francisco St. Please plan on bringing your child with their lunch- we will eat before dismissal time 🙂
• Please check your child’s lunchbox for Magnolia classroom spoons and forks. They have a green piece of tape on the ends of them for easy recognition!
• Please Save the Date for our end of year party- we’re planning on celebrating on Friday May 31st! Stay tuned for more details coming soon- for now you can plan on joining if you are able from 9:30a to 11:00a!

Rainbow Colors Everywhere

From science experiments, sensorial activities, books, songs, light play and art- we’ve been interested in all things COLOR! We learned about primary colors and how, when they are combined, they create secondary and tertiary colors. When you add black or white to a color, you shade and tint it- which changes it’s color value.

Family Visits

Thank you for Angel and Patrick (and Granda Patrick!) for joining us during our readathon week! We enjoyed listening to stories with you. We also had a visit from Hayes and Henley’s Mimi and Papa who brought everything we needed for a DINOSAUR HUNT! We had a great time searching for dinos, excavating fossils, enjoying a dinosaur themed snack and more. Dylan’s mom Layla, dad Stephen and little brother Tomas joined Magnolia for a magic show and shared music, celebrations, and even food with us from Layla’s home country, Brazil! Thank you also to visiting artist Natasha Triplett for sharing her book “Juneteenth Is” with us during our readathon week. It’s been great to have so many visitors!

Spotlight on Math Concepts

During our week of learning letter “o”, the children were thrilled that the letter itself is simply a circle! Magnolia friends know so much about circles. Emily introduced ways to measure the length from the center of a circle to the edge, the length around a circle, and the length across the circle through the middle. The children learned the terms: radius, diameter and circumference. They had a great time imagining they were circles- demonstrating one arm up and to the side for radius, and two arms out to the side for diameter.

May Day

On May 1st we talked about how it was a special day to honor workers! We asked: can you name a worker in our community? Some said doctor, garbage truck driver, pilot, YuRen ♥, farmer… We learned that May Day is a day where workers all over the world unite to demand changes when things are unfair or unsafe. We wondered- what would it be like to come to school everyday and not have a lunch time or a rest time? We’d probably feel very tired and hungry. Some workers in the world do not have breaks, time to eat, or even fair pay. When something is unfair, people can unite and ask for things to be better. We read some books about characters that stand up for their rights including “The Day the Crayons Quit” and “Get up, Stand up!”
