Cinco de Mayo presentations

We shared with our class why Mexicans celebrate Cinco de Mayo, and the origin of this holiday. In 1862, Napoleon III sent his French army to Mexico to take over the country. Benito Juárez, the Mexican president, and Ignacio Zaragoza with his army of soldiers and civilians, bravely defended Puebla, and maintained Mexico’s freedom and independence.

We also shared the legend of the Mexican flag shield. The Aztecas were looking for a place to build their city. They were looking for a special sign, an eagle, standing on a cactus while devouring a snake. After many years of searching for this symbol, they found it in the middle of a lagoon, where Mexico City now stands. The students loved listening to both, Cinco de Mayo history and the Mexican shield legend.

Cinco de Mayo projects

This week we engaged the children in big group projects related to the Fiesta; flags, Mexican shield, papel picado, Azteca dancers prints, maracas prints, and Cinco de Mayo dances book. They were absolutely excited about all the activities.

Tamales Making

Holda, Daniel, Kim, and Jill started making tamales on Thursday. They were a great team and made almost a hundred tamales! Some children voluntered and made the last tamales.

Cinco de Mayo Fiesta

We began the day with lots of excitement. The children were so happy looking forward to the party! Holda led the lemonade table and everybody had a turn to squeeze limes. Jill helped changing and braiding the children. She also figured out how to please the students with very short hair who asked for braids/ponytails. It was impressive how the students handled waiting for the parents and danced!

Thank you very much for supporting, participating and being part of this event!
