This month, we are focusing on the fall season theme and pumpkin study. Firstly, we introduced the term “abscission” to illustrate how trees shed their leaves in the fall. We then discussed the distinctions between deciduous trees and evergreens. Our initial project entailed creating a tree using natural materials. Fortunately, one windy day allowed us to bring this project to life. Our second project incorporated foil stamps and tempra paints to craft fall leaves. Lastly, our study of “fall colors” involved blending watercolors on fine paper- watching carefully how the colors mixed and changed shape and color. With these papers we then created our fall trees from found branches, to be set in a place so they can be illuminated from behind. The children enjoyed all these explorations.
In the pumpkin study, we engaged in pumpkin washing and pumpkin hammering activities. We explored the anatomy of a pumpkin and its life cycle. Furthermore, we utilized the falling leaves to decorate and complete a large pumpkin drawing.
Other projects
For the sound of week “c,” children made a cake with Noushin. For “d” we made a delicious date dessert, and with Daniela we doodled and “Took a dot for a walk”.
Compost
Kate, Solomon’s mom, provided us with a glimpse into her home composting process. She began by displaying an assortment of fruit and vegetable scraps, like banana and carrot peels, avocado rinds and pits, eggshells, and coffee grounds. We observed how the fresh compost felt raw and damp, blending seamlessly with the soil, while the three-month-old compost was hard to distinguish in the soil, which felt fresher and neatly arranged. The most thrilling part was interacting with the wriggling earthworms, and witnessing their role in consuming and transforming organic waste into nutrient-rich compost. We learned the importance of mindfulness while handling earthworms, particularly the baby worms, whose soft texture and movements felt comforting and smooth.
Birthday Celebration
We celebrated Camille and Oscar’s 4th birthday this month.
