Moon Festival

You may have heard your Caterpillar talk about mooncakes or the moon lately. The Mid-Autumn Festival, also called the Moon Festival, is a celebration of the first full moon of Autumn. It is celebrated in many Asian countries and by those of the Asian diaspora all around the world.  Some moon-inspired activities and treats included: a sky water table, play dough mooncakes, the retelling of the Jade Rabbit story, painting a moon with flour paint, a special Jade Rabbit & the moon snack, moon pops with pineapples made with lemonade prepared by Magnolia class and leftover special snack. Favorite Moon Festival and Moon books included: A Big Mooncake for Little StarMoon Pops, Little Kitten’s First Full Moon, and City Moon.

Mau Mouse & Mouse Paint

We’ve also been reading many books about mice in honor of Mau Mouse. Caterpillar friends and friends from all the ECC classrooms loved to visit Mau Mouse. Unfortunately, Mau Mouse died at the end of last week. She lived a much longer life than expected for a mouse that was bred to be fed to a snake- which she was but survived! Kirstie told a story about a sunflower and it’s life cycle.  How it grew up from a little seed, could drink water and make food for itself, and would follow the sun across the sky. It got older and older and soon it wasn’t able to drink water and make food for itself like it used to and it died, it’s seeds going back into the ground. We talked about how Mau Mouse also got older and older and her body stopped being able to drink water and eat food and she died. RIP Mau Mouse. Favorite Mau Mouse books: Inside Mouse, Outside MouseIf You Plant a SeedGood News, Bad News, and Mouse Paint. Below you’ll see some photos of our own “mouse paint” activity.

Songs We’re Singing

  • “I see the Moon” attributed to Meredith Wilson with Oak Tree, Lark, Rose, and Mountains & Sea verses
I see the moon, the moon sees meDown through the leaves of the old oak treePlease let the light that shines on meShine on the one I love
I hear the lark, the lark hears me
Singing a song with a memory
Please let the light that shines on meShine on the one I love
I kissed the rose, the rose kissed meFragrant as only a rose can be Please take the kiss that comforts meBack to the one I love
Over the mountain, over the seaBack where my heart is longing to bePlease, let the light that shines on meShine on the one I love
