Hello Blackberry Families,

Reminder, School is closed Monday, January 15th for Martin Luther King’s Day.

Today we went on our field trip Adventure Playground for our field trip! We had an amazing time. For some of our friends it was their very first field trip, and when presented with the opportunity to show their community their kindest self -they shined! They took care of each other, showed their best manners to our bus drivers, and had so much fun. Below our some pictures.

In Math, the 1st grade group read a story problem which gave us information to create an equation. They also reviewed adding and subtracting double digit numbers using a number line.

2nd grade worked on collecting data for graphing. They were able to go around the school asking teachers what their favorite food is. Not only did they enjoy meeting more teachers, practiced introducing themselves, and work on tallying data. Once all the data was collected we had to decide between make a pictograph or a bar graph. Our bar graph is currently in progress.

For Literacy, we began by practicing spelling and reading nonsense words. These words had various digraphs (ch,sh,th,ph), ending in -ing, -unk, or -ong. The list was composed of 24 words. We had 1 minute to read each word. Our goal every day was to read more words than the last day.  This activity is used to practice our decoding and blending. We also introduced 4 new vocabulary words: heel, axe, luggage, and hive. In writing we are working on adding more details to our writing and not forgetting our periods and capitals at the beginning of sentences.

In Art class, Julianne discussed Dr. Martin Luther King and all the accomplishments he made for the Civil Rights Movement. They discussed the advancements he made for the people of color in the United States in the 1950s – 1960s. The link below is to check out some news and updates from Julianne and the Art classroom! This has crossed over to our Cultural Studies classes. We went over Dr. Martin Luther King and also fairness and equalities of prison systems. The students also learned about Alfred Nobel. As he is known for inventing dynamite, he is also associated with the Nobel Peace Prize. Students saw some examples of who have received them in the past and for what reason.

For cultural studies we talked about Dr. Martin Luther King and his impact on the civil rights movement, and how he believed in peace. We also talked about Alfred Nobel and his invention of dynamite ultimately lead to the creation of the Nobel Peace Prize. We discussed the various ways we can be create peace in our world. Then we created self-portraits as peacemakers. We also listened to Todd Parr’s The Peace book.

In Science, students learned about hurricanes and snowstorms. We talked about why hurricanes get names, and why meteorologists are pushing for snowstorms to also get names.

We are off to a great, positive start! Everyone has show such great care for their community and we are so proud of our Blackberrians. We would be remiss if we didnt take a moment to thank Perry, B, Hannah, and Bay. Although they all  have specific roles in Blackberry they always show up for all our community. They are a vital part of who we are and what we do. Our bonus teachers! So thank you Perry, B, Hannah, and Bay we adore you!

Thank you everyone and see you all Tuesday, January 16, 2024!

Gracias y Saludos,

Mark and Leslie

Questions to ask:

  • What are the sight words this week?
  • How many nonsense words were you able to read in a minute? Can you remember any silly ones?
  • Who is Alfred Nobel and what did he do with his life?
  • How do you show your community you care for it?
  • What’s the pattern in our calendar?
