Apples & Rosh Hashana

With apple season and the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashana, coinciding, we took the opportunity to connect our investigation of apples to learning a little bit about Rosh Hashana. One of our favorite activities was listening to the shofar, the ram’s horn, that is blown to bring in the new year. We made applesauce inspired by the book Apple Days: A Rosh Hashanah Story and created art and did activities inspired by apples. One emergent activity was observing an apple that was eaten by another creature. We realized that a worm or some other small creature got to the apple before we did. It made us think about the toy apples in our classroom that had pretend worms in them!

Mooncakes & Mid-Autumn Moon Festival

You may have heard your Caterpillar talk about mooncakes or the moon lately. The Mid-Autumn Festival, also called the Moon Festival, is a celebration of the first full moon of Autumn. It is celebrated in many Asian countries and by those of the Asian diaspora all around the world. Kirstie brought in some artifacts that demonstrated ways that her Chinese American family celebrates Moon Festival, including various mooncakes to try. Other moon-inspired activities and treats included: a sky water table, playdough mooncakes, the retelling of the Jade Rabbit story, a special Jade Rabbit & the moon snack, and stamping Jade Rabbit in the moon. Favorite Moon Festival books included: Round like a MooncakeMoon PopsA Big Mooncake for Little Star.

Music with Chrissy

Our Music Teacher Chrissy comes to visit us every Tuesday morning. We’ve been singing songs, dancing, and learning about her ukelele.

Art with Julianne

Our resident teaching artist, Julianne, visits us every other week on Wednesday mornings. She brought in a circle project for us where we had the opportunity to use white glue and colorful circles to create collages. Julianne was inspired by all our work investigating round objects.
