Autumn Colors & Leaves
Caterpillar friends have been engaging with Autumn through the exploration of autumn colors, autumn leaves and pumpkins, and clothing for the changing of the season. Caterpillar friends were invited to make Autumn leaf sun catchers, paint boxes with autumn colors, try on different colder weather clothes and get cozy in the camping dramatic play, count felt autumn leaves, observe natural autumn wonders like acorns, sticks, and leaves, play with a mushroom and small critter small world, sing songs, and read lots of books featuring the season. We’ve also been reading lots of books written and illustrated by indigenous peoples of Turtle Island (aka North America) with themes of family, gratitude, love and care. We do this to honor that many indigenous people observe Thanksgiving as a National Day of Mourning and many families also use the day to center gratitude and family. Some favorite titles have been: Kiss by Kiss: A Counting Book for Families by Richard van Camp, Enough to Share by Richard van Camp, Sweetest Kulu by Celina Kalluk, Sweep by Louises Grieg, Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn by Kenard Pak, Mushroom Lullaby by Kenneth Kraegel. We also made pumpkin pie and use special cookie cutters to cut out leaf crust decorations.
