Welcome Tomas!

Tomas and parents Layla and Stephen started in Caterpillar class this week! Please say hello and welcome 🙂

All Bodies are Good Bodies

We have begun a new inquiry into bodies, starting with the idea that all bodies are good bodies and the exploration of how our bodies move. We’ve been reading Bodies are Cool, Every Body: A First Conversation About BodiesSome Bodies, Every Body: A Celebration of Diverse Abilities, and Lovely, books that invite us to value a diversity of bodies. We’ve been making observations about the different bodies we encounter in books and what our own bodies look like.

How can our bodies move?

Over the past couple weeks Caterpillars have been exploring how our bodies move. We have been trying new ways, and honing old ways, of moving our bodies in big ways, like climbing up and across the Pikler triangle bridge, going across the monkey bars, swinging on the swing, spinning on the swing, climbing, dropping from, and going in and out of the big climbing dome, navigating the uneven terrain of the berm, splashing in puddles, bouncing on hoppers, and throwing and kicking balls. Caterpillars have been exercising healthy risk taking and showing resilience, and sometimes even humor, when there are unexpected falls and owies. We’ve been singing “Head , Shoulders, Knees and Toes,” identifying each body part as we sing it in normal, fast, and slow paces. We’ve been reading books that encourage big movements: Stomp!Hands Up!The Button Book and that show how there are so many ways to get around and move:  Every Body: A Celebration of Diverse AbilitiesHello, Goodbye Dog.

More Caterpillar Happenings

Caterpillar friends have been seeking each other out to play and having conversations that don’t include teachers more than ever. There has been lots of practice taking turns and waiting for our turn. We often cheer friends on as they use the monkey bars, jump on the trampoline, and climb on the Pikler triangle structures.
