Hello Cedar families, another school year is about to finish. That being said, this will be our last blog that includes an abundance of vivid images revealing your child’s learning and development in different ways throughout the year. We hope you enjoy looking at it as much as we enjoyed experiencing it.

We appreciate all of you, for your support and trust.  Along with the journey, I hope we all grow and benefit from it. Thank you!!

Mammals + Humans

We started with the characteristics of mammals and talked about the different animals between diurnal and nocturnal and their diets.  From there, we introduced the words herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores.  After it, we moved on to the study of humans to connect with our continent study so far with people from different countries with different looks, languages, and cultures.

We reviewed how unique everyone looks: different skin tones, hair, eye colors, etc. It is important that we respect each other simply because we are humans—we have some basic needs and have feelings and emotions. We also talked that feelings/emotions can be expressed in different ways and that taking care of our emotions is as important as taking care of our bodies.  We practiced body-gratitude mindfulness saying thank you to each part of our body including to ourselves as a whole person. Many practical life activities like baby washing, teeth brushing, and nail polishing were very popular!

Sound of the Week–“x”, “y”, “z”

For the sound of “x”, we made the hand painting “x” rays.  For “y”, we made yarn paintings. For “z”, we used the letter z to make zebras.

Music Appreciation

Izzy and her dad Jacob brought their violins and demonstrated how to use them. Jacob read a story called “Zin! Zin! Zin! A Violin”, and then taught us about the bow parts including stick, hair, and frog which is on the lower side of the bow and is the black part, and is for tuning. Jacob also played different songs to show how the violin can come out with high, low, fast, and slow tunes, or play in different kinds of songs like country music, or classical.

Andrew, Miles’s dad taught us about the rhythm of music. He explained music contains three parts including melody, bass, and rhythm. Tempo is part of the rhythm, showing how fast or slow a piece of music is performed. We then listened to different songs and tapped them with chopsticks (also marched) to experience the difference in tempo. Furthermore, rhythm is everywhere not limited to music. We can also find rhythm in different kinds of sounds like machines, steam trains, and even animals like seals or monkeys.
