Hello Cedar families,

It was great to see many of you at Back to School Night yesterday. We hope you found the information useful and got an idea of what your child will be learning in the class this year. The following is what we have focused on these past two weeks.

Apple

There are more than 3,000 apple varieties exist in the world. We introduced four kinds of familiar apples (Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Gala, and Fuji) to the class. Children watched closely and explored them with their senses–they paid attention to the differences among their colors, shapes, textures of skin, and smells. We then discussed the life cycle of an apple, dissected an apple, and learned its parts, including leaf, stem, skin, flesh, core, and seeds. We read some books about apples.  The children also enjoyed some other apple-related activities like sorting, matching, and counting in the classroom. Finally, we made apple crisp and had an apple tasting with the apples we introduced and we voted for our favorite one. The winner is Gala!

Sound of Week—“a”

For the sound of the week a“, our focus was on the apple as well! We did apple printing on our canvas bags and on paper! Each of their bags will become customized and unique throughout the year! The printed apples on paper became part of the circle mobile at the heart of our Cedar classroom. We talked about the meaning of the “circle” in many cultures: unity, friendship, and wholeness.
