Hello Cedar families,

As mentioned during our Back to School Night here is the email address we would like you to use when you need to communicate with us. This will help us, three teachers stay on the same page.   cedarteachers@theberkeleyschool.org

It has been a smooth and joyful start to October! We are happy to see friendships developing, and everybody getting comfortable in the classroom. For the past 2 weeks, we have been focusing on living and non-living things and the sound of the week “b”.

Living vs. Non-living

In Montessori, the study of living and non-living is important because it’s the foundation for future learning on the subjects of Botany and Zoology.  It also aims to help children see and recognize our relationships with nature and deepen our appreciation and connection with the world. First, we learned about the needs of living things (water, air, food, shelter, sunlight, to grow and reproduce), which differ from non-living. Children walked around the classroom to find and label something as “living” or “non-living”. We also had a nature observation walk in the yard.

Sound of the Week—“b”

Our sound of the past two weeks has been “b”: bird, butterfly, button… We played games looking for these objects hidden in the room and then learned to give clues to describe these objects. Ask your child which other “b” words or objects they remember. To finish off the week we explored the symmetry of the “b” butterfly with a creative printing project.

Mehregan Celebration

The Mehregan Festival is an ancient Persian festival of autumn, a celebration of harvest and abundance. The word Mehregan means love, joy, and compassion. Noushin displayed various items on a tablecloth and explained what each item stood for.  For example, the mirror and candles symbolize light or the sun; seasonal fruits like apples and pears symbolize abundance….
