Please enjoy our first blog of January! Over the past two weeks, we’ve been focusing on the themes of winter and trees.
Winter
To celebrate the winter season, we transformed our Practical Life and art areas into a wonderland of winter-themed activities. The children delighted in stories about snowmen, sparking their imaginations as they each painted their own snowman, each brimming with unique expressions and personalities, which filled the classroom with winter cheer.

We also conducted an ice experiment that explored the three states of water. The children marveled at how solid ice cubes took on the shapes of their containers and how, as the ice melted into liquid and finally evaporated, the shapes disappeared altogether. It was a wonderful exercise in patience as we observed the slow, fascinating transformation from solid to vapor.
Tree
During our tree study, we explored the beautiful trees in our schoolyard and learned many of their names. We observed how each tree is unique—some are tall and wide, while others are smaller, with leaves of different shapes and sizes, and trunks that can be rough or smooth. We also learned about two types of trees—those that change color and lose their leaves in the fall, and those that do not.
We studied the parts of a tree and even labeled them on a real tree, enhancing our understanding. We discussed what trees need to live and discovered how, through photosynthesis, they create their own food. We also reflected on the many ways trees contribute to our lives—not just by providing food, medicine, and everyday materials, but also by offering protection like shade and helping preserve water and soil.
Beyond that, we recognized that trees are vital homes for countless insects and animals. Understanding their significance, we talked about why it’s essential to care for trees to ensure life thrives on Earth. To express our gratitude, we hugged the trees and said a heartfelt “thank you.” We also learned to take care of plants by gently clearing their leaves with wet cotton balls to help keep them healthy.
Cooking project
For the Sound of the Week “h,” we shredded potatoes and made hash browns.
