One of the most difficult kinds of work students undertake in fourth and fifth grade is in the literature circles. Teachers provide all kinds of scaffolding to help students have academic conversations about literature. This round, they are reading various fiction novels that teachers chose. They have assignments due an average of twice a week. They have a talking stone to help limit interruption or blabber mouths ;). They even have crowns for the discussion directors to assert their authority. The director also grades the group, so don’t be surprised if you child tells you about the C- their reading group received today. Don’t worry, that didn’t come from me. It’s the one time I let them use letter grades, and it’s coming from their self assessment. Cheers, and as always, let me know if you have questions.
