After our community meeting for business this afternoon, a pattern emerged of boys and girls taking opposing sides. The time was right for some emergent curriculum on gender, and the various continua which our society imposes on us that stereotype what it means to be more or less a man or woman. It was fascinating to learn how knowledgable and articulate the group already is on this issue, far beyond pink is for girls, blue is for boys. When asked why this was important to talk about, they were pretty sure it would be important when they were teenagers. No one, luckily, identified with all the descriptors for a particular gender stereotype, nor did they aspire to them. This is ongoing work , this deepening of awareness, and I’ll keep you informed as we unpack big issues like this one!
