Dear families,

As you may have read in an earlier blog this year from our Student Life Coordinator, Kate Klaire, or seen under the Ashoka Spotlight display case just inside the school doors, the Ashoka student team decided that TBS is joining the Wear Out the Silence campaign, in support of the Movement for Black Lives.

The Ashoka team presented today to all K-5 classrooms and the MS community, inviting students to  join the campaign by wearing Black Lives Matter t-shirts on Fridays to school.. They have spoken about the campaign and the Movement for Black Lives in the past at assemblies, and put questions and answers about the campaign in the display case. Your child may want to talk with you about it. If you’d like support in talking with your child and you’re not sure what to say, The Wear Out the Silence Campaign provides excellent resources, including a page titled, Conversation Suggestions, as well as a resources page.

The school will continue to raise up the conversation of racial justice through discussion, education, and action. Look for more to come. We will be hosting a Family Ed event on how to talk to your kids about race, as well as inviting someone from the Black Lives Matter movement to the school.

The school will be ordering shirts for any student who would like one. All proceeds from the shirts will go directly to support Black Lives Matter. We will accept donations. Shirts cost $15. We will leave a collection box at the front desk for cash or checks which we will deliver to Black Lives Matter. . If you would like your own shirt, order here.

Last week’s problem of the week in fifth grade:

Dad bakes some cookies. He eats one hot out of the oven and leaves the rest on the counter to cool. He goes outside to read.

Dave comes into the kitchen and finds the cookies. Since he is hungry, he eats half a dozen of them.

Then Kate wanders by, feeling rather hungry as well. She eats half as many as Dave did.

Jim and Eileen walk through next, and each of them eats one third of the remaining cookies. Hollis comes into the kitchen and eats half of the cookies that are left on the counter.
Last of all, Mom eats just one cookie.
Dad comes back inside, ready to pig out. “Hey!” he exclaims. “There is only one cookie left!” How many cookies did Dad bake in all?
