Last week, Cerrito sent out our first round of yellow Friday Folders. Seeing as this is a new system, we thought it would be helpful to answer any important questions that may come up and clarify the process.
What is the purpose of the Friday Folder?
The Friday Folder serves 2 purposes. The main purpose is for students to pick 2 pieces of work that they feel proud of, reflect on it, and then bring it home to be shown and responded to by parenting adults. These materials should be found on the “Bring Back to School” side of the folder, and should be sent back the following Monday. These 2 pieces of work and the reflection sheet will then be put into students’ school portfolios.
The second purpose of the Friday Folder is to bring home other completed work; this will be on the “Keep At Home” side. We strongly encourage families to look at all the work brought home, but to prioritize the 2 chosen pieces and reflection response.
What is the role of the parenting adult in the F.F. process?
We ask that families look through the work their child brings home, focusing on the reflection and chosen work pieces, and write a response in the appropriate space on the form to be sent back to school.
How often will the F.F. be sent home and when should it be sent back?
Friday Folders will be sent home every 2 weeks. Work should be reviewed and responded to over the weekend and then sent back to school the following Monday with the 2 pieces of chosen work and the reflection piece completed by both student and parenting adult.
What is the purpose of the Portfolio?
Students’ portfolios, which will be kept at school, are meant to showcase the work students feel most proud of over the course of the year. For every 2 pieces, students will also have an attached reflection sheet, which parenting adults will also collaborate on. Portfolios will be presented at parent-teacher-conferences and given to families at the end of the year.
