Field Trip to Precita Eyes

On Tuesday, we had the opportunity to go to San Francisco’s Mission District to learn more about the history of the neighborhood’s murals and its documentation of local and national stories. This visit tied in not only to our year-long learning about California but specifically enriches our current study of how to represent stories visually— through pictures. Because of their explicit connections to immigration or gentrification–issues relevant to the Mission—many of the murals we saw also tied into our through-line, “How does access to resources shape culture?” Students used visual thinking models to analyze the murals and thanks to our tour guide, learned not just about the content of the art but the history behind how they were made and by whom. Students also spent time in Garfield Park where they read an article about the real Lost Woman of San Nichols Island.

Cerritoberry Friendship Feast

On Thursday, Cerrito planned, prepared and hosted a beautiful feast for their friends and family. The feast was a way for students to show their gratitude for their families and loved ones and for each other and our class. They eagerly chopped, tore, peeled, sorted, and trimmed. In addition to preparing the salad, roasted veggies, and soup, students gathered natural materials to decorate the tables, created menus and place cards, and wrote letters of gratitude for their families or friends. The classroom was transformed into a fine dining establishment (or something like it; certainly there was fine dining!) and the students proudly served their guests and teachers. The result was a beautiful, bountiful autumnal meal at a slower pace than we normally get to enjoy together as a class at school.

Granfriends Day

One of the most popular times of year at TBS is Grandfriends Fay. Important relatives and family friends get a chance to come visit the school, participate in an assembly hosted by K-8th graders, and then visit with their students in the classroom. This year in Cerrito, grandfriends received a tour of the classroom, looked at their child’s portfolio, played some games, and did a science exploration. It was a delight and a great way to spend our last day before Fall Break!
