We had our first Community Meeting this afternoon, in which we discuss issues that affect our community, practice mindfulness, and grow as a community.
Everyone finished their first published piece and read in the Author’s Chair today. As we feasted on cold watermelon, students listened and laughed to tales about pets and rock climbing, summer and faraway places. Teachers took careful notes to decide what individualized instruction students will need in the weeks to come as we plunge into a unit on memoir.
A fifth grader volunteered to read first. Thanks for being brave!
One happy camper
Some of the topics we discussed in Community Meeting. The students write in a notebook when they have a problem or concern. Every entry has to be signed and dated, and if they would like, we will discuss the issue in meeting.
The published writing, which you can check out on Back to School Night.
Julia led the students in making cardboard looms this morning. They will be weaving a lot this year, especially as we approach Fort Ross (January 28 and 29.
The only homework is to read tonight for 20+ minutes and finish the four responses in the reader’s notebook. Most students only have one or two to complete, and some are already finished.
Don’t forget to pack sun and swim gear for tomorrow, not to mention a snack and lunch.
