Scientists in Cerrito and Strawberry Creek develop scientific habits and their science-centered language through tons of hands-on investigations, use of models, writing, extensive readings, and occasionally through short films (Brainpop and Mystery Science are oft-used resources). Collaborative small group work is the norm, and teachers scaffold these by assigning roles, prompting discussions, and emphasizing goal-setting and reflection. My intention is for your student to feel confident in obtaining and analyzing evidence and communicating their theories and discoveries of the world to their community.

We use Lawrence Hall of Science’s FOSS kits, which are both materials and curriculum that support the NEXT Generation Science Standards. The units we will be exploring this year include:

I. Energy and Electromagnetism–many first hand discoveries and experiments all culminating to a final “gizmo” project

Investigation 1: Energy and Circuit Building

Investigation 2: The Force of Magnetism

Investigation 3: Electromagnets

Investigation 4: Energy Transfer

Investigation 5: Waves

II. Astronomy–it’s stellar with outdoor observations, analyzing data, and exploring properties of the atmosphere

Investigation 1: Sun and Earth

Investigation 2: Planetary Systems

Investigation 3: Earth’s Atmosphere

Investigation 4: Heating Earth

Investigation 5: Water Planet

We are looking forward to many weeks of exciting investigations and experiments to come!
