Hello Cerrito Families!
Last week was a big week with Halloween to kick it off and a field trip a few days later. In the midst of all of that we had a new student, Ariel Luna, join us on Tuesday. We are excited to welcome him and his family to TBS as they make our community richer. Please do what you can to welcome them, in your own way!
Upcoming Dates!
Nov. 11: Veterans’ Day (no school, no childcare)
Nov. 14: Jesus Sosa‘s demonstration during school and alebrije sale after school.
Nov. 18: VIP Day – UAC Very Important People will be invited to visit in the early afternoon. Previously known as Grandfriends Day. For VIP Day, we are inviting anyone who is considered very important to your child or close friends that are involved in the care of your child(ren). This could be a grandparent, an uncle, a coach, a neighbor, or even you, a parent! MATHEMATICS!
5th grade math students brought in candy wrappers from their halloween stash to do some math with! They grouped the wrappers in to categories and created a bar graph to represent the data. They worked together to identify categories that fit into a theme, such as graphy by color or brand. They presented their graphs to each other and discussed their process and why they picked the categories for their graph.
The next day they used a different groups posters to calculate the percentage of each category. This demonstrated the importance of rounding appropriately so that their total was close to or equal to 100. Students were highly engaged in this real life application of math, with a favorite item; candy.
Fourth grade mathers have spent the last several weeks shoring up their foundation of multiplication, prime and composite numbers, factors, and multiples. Students discovered prime and composite numbers through building arrays, first in tiles and then creating posters with a partner. Students have regular, multisensory practice of multiples and multiplication facts through daily warm-ups of games like Balance Points, and Heads-Up, and Boom. Daily attempts to beat our own time in Boom allowed for an emergent opportunity to practice graphing our data points and discuss trends and what shape our progress should take. Ask your kiddo to show you any of these games. Lastly, coming to shared understandings of mathematical definitions and terms is necessary for deep discussions to take place. Mathers practiced their reasoning discussion and reasoning skills while coming up with a shared definitions in many ways, the most fun being the time we answered the question, “What is a sandwich?” Stay tuned for how we weave more math into this developing discussion!
Recycled Runway photos!
It was so awesome to see 4th and 5th graders working with 1st and 2nd graders to create a one of a kind costume piece for someone in they group. They worked together to integrate each person’s ideas into the costume and took turns making different elements of the outfit.
