Writing:
It was a big month in writing as students finished their persuasive letters and have almost all read them aloud to their classmates in Authors chair. Author’s chair is a wonderful opportunity for them to practice reading aloud, receiving positive feedback, as well as the ways they could improve their writing. The audience practices attentive listening and how to construct helpful feedback.
You may have heard students practicing the poem “Where the Sidewalk Ends” they have been asked to memorize it to kick off Poetry month! For the next few weeks students will be reading and analyzing poems, learning rhyme schemes, and of course, writing their own poetry! If anyone would like to come in and read their favorite poems or share their love of writing poetry please let me know!
Reading
We finished our first round of book clubs this week! After working hard on their final projects, students presented their work to each other today. They summarized their books, read from their final projects, and shared what they thought of the books. They made thoughtful connections to each other’s books, such as how all of the book had Asian main characters and identified the themes of injustice and discrimination.
We were excited to share with them then next book club books which are the following:
Unbound Bud, Not Buddy Parker Inheritance
Science
We have officially begun our new science unit, a study of planetary systems! We started as a class by observing shadows, seasons, and are moving on to constellations, the Moon, and following that up with night-sky observations. As a bridge to what we have been studying in class, students will make night-sky observations at home. Take a few minutes to enjoy the night sky together on a clear night, and talk about what you see and observe! We’ll spend some time studying our atmosphere and weather and turn our attention to our heating Earth. After developing an awareness of what is meant by climate change, we’ll start our final project which will include research, model making, and presenting about climate solutions.
