Hello Live Oak families;
It was so fun to see you all at our first Live Oak meetup! Thank you for making the time to attend with your families, and thank you, Anna, Patrick, and Whit for choosing a great place!
Truck Unit
We were proud, excited, and motivated to “Follow the child” (Maria Montessori) with this fun theme the children initiated two weeks ago. After crafting many truck projects the teachers prepared for them, they surprised us by creating their very own designs! They used the scrap construction paper on the art shelf to design different and great models, such as delivery trucks, excavators, and crane trucks.
While working on these projects, the students explored math concepts, such as geometry to shape their designs, counting wheels and windows, balancing poles, and symmetry. They also approached art and language by naming the parts of their truck and their functions.
All the models were impressive, unique and well done! It was a pleasure to witness how engaged they were, working in groups of four, sharing materials, and having very animated conversations.
Math with trucks
Preschool children love counting, and of course, they counted wheels, windows, levers, how many garbage bags fit in a garbage truck, and sorted trucks. They also counted and made simple addition and subtraction using mini trucks.
Sensorial
Each child helped to prepare the sensory bin with sand, pebbles, and mini trucks. It has been so popular!
Language
For the sound of the week we follow the Jolly Phonics order. So far, we have presented s, a, t, p, and n. We closed the “p” week with a pajama party and pancakes that the children loved!
The cooks for our first cooking project were Whit, Elise, Iona, and Henrik. They did a great job mixing all the ingredients!
To honor the student’s interest, we updated our library with a variety of books with truck stories, pictures, and information about different kinds of big trucks.
Art
Following the children’s interest, Niki’s basic drawing lesson focused on drawing trucks using geometric shapes. We are very impressed how engaged and enthusiastic the children were working on their well done and detailed truck drawings! She also provided tempera paint for the children to make truck tracks. How they loved mixing the colors with the truck tracks!
Julianne, our art teacher brought a truck project which involved shaping a truck with geometric shapes and drawings details such as wheels, lights, sirenes, and drivers.
