Hola Live Oak Families!
We want to start by expressing our gratitude to Paula and Mike, Paige’s parents, for the Lunar New Year presentation and the goodies that the children loved! With images and simple words, Paula shared with our class all the activities people do to get ready for this celebration.
We provided the art shelf with projects related to the Lunar New year: a rabbit collage, a dragon, a Chinese lion head puppet, Chinese characters, rabbit headband, and a rabbit puppet. We also learned about the Chinese zodiac and figured out what animal year everyone was born on. We have a lot of piggies in Live Oak! We also have a few dogs, a couple rats, and one rooster. Each child got a picture of their Chinese zodiac animal which they got to color and take home.
The children worked together and made a Chinese lion head and a dragon head they used in the parade!
To honor the Lunar New Year the cooking project was fried rice and everybody had the opportunity to chop carrots, zucchinis, tofu, and spinach.
Reptiles
The students keep showing interest in this unit. They love listening to the science in reptile books and learning facts about the many different types, such as snakes, turtles, lizards, and komodo dragons.
We learned that a saltwater crocodile can grow up to 23ft long. To demonstrate the length, we counted 23 feet using a measuring tape (actually, we tried, but our measuring tape was not long enough to measure 23ft!). The children lined up their bodies next to the measuring tape to compare their size to the saltwater crocodile.
The Horned Lizard
Every time we study these vertebrates the students have a favorite. Usually, it’s one of the big snakes. This year the horned lizard is the winner. They love the fact that this animal squirts blood from its eyes to distract enemies. It was so popular that we helped them make a big horned lizard with a cardboard box and egg cartons. Then the children played pretending to squirt blood from their eyes at other reptiles using a spray with colored water.
A special guest
On Thursday, Lamar, our admissions director, brought in two of his pet snakes. His ball python, Arya, and a hognose. The hognose snake is special because it’s an albino! He told us that Arya, the ball python, is very friendly and loves to be held and petted. He also talked to us about his hognose’s funny behaviors, like pretending to be dead, or pretending to be a cobra. He told us how long they get when they reach adulthood, and the children even got to touch the snakes!
Fantasy corner
The fantasy corner is very popular. Our students love playing in the cave with all the reptiles living in there.
Art
Sea turtles, snakes, and land turtles were some of the art projects these weeks.

We celebrate two more January birthdays. Whit turned four and Ziggy three!
Happy birthday to Whit and Ziggy and thank you to their families for joining in their celebrations!
Welcome Leo, Isabel, and Tony! Our students were so ready for a new friend. They gave Leo a kind and warm welcome and he blended right into the class and had a great first day. Thank you Live Oak children!
