Hola Familias de Live Oak!
The Live Oak class enjoyed the rainy days very much. After observing the big puddles and walking in them they collected toys from different stations and created a water play area. It was a pleasure to see them creating an environment of collaboration, creativity, and engagement.
Beautiful browns
Our class has been observing, discussing, and learning about skin colors. In a circle lesson, we showed them that by mixing black, white, and the primary colors red, blue and yellow, we were able to make many different shades of skin colors. The message of this lesson is that we are all the same no matter what color our skin is. The children helped to make several tones and named each one. Cinnamon, peanut butter, brownie, milk chocolate, milk shake, and just chocolate. They were very interested in identifying their own skin color and making hand prints!
This week we spoke about Habiba Mohammed, Director of the CGE (Centre for Girls Education) in Nigeria, Africa. The Live Oak teachers collaborate with this program which supports the poorest girls in Nigeria. The Centre offers a range of programming for girls who are in preschool (theirs is Montessor-based with lots of mentoring from us), in-school, out-of-school, and married adolescents. The goal is to delay marriage and use the precious years gained to help girls acquire such knowledge and skills as reproductive health, negotiation with parents and husbands, literacy and numeracy, and other capacities that will help equip them to work towards the lives they desire.
Parents visiting/volunteering in Live Oak
Our first parent visitor was Tony, Leo’s dad, who shared his drawings with our students. After drawing some children’s requests, Tony invited each student to make a scribble, and from it, he created a cartoon character. The students were so thrilled by this fun activity.
Isabel, Leo’s Mom, was our second visitor. She did a mini readathon and pleased the students reading their favorite books.
After Marshall’s birthday circle, Marissa and Mathew made balloon hats for each student. They were so excited that we ended up having a balloon hats party dance!
Geometry
Our class keeps showing interest in making art projects using geometric shapes such as triangles, squares, circles, pentagons, rectangles, and trapezoids.
