Human Body
Since Marisa’s visit in which she shared how doctors take care of their patients, our class has been learning how the human body works. The children are exploring and learning about the digestive, circulatory, and respiratory systems through books and a variety of attractive materials. They had so much fun when Marshall helped the teachers demonstrate what our lungs look like when we breathe in and out! They also enjoyed the heart pump experiment. The experiment showed how the heart makes the blood circulate through the veins and arteries. When introducing the brain, we made a game where a child was another child’s brain and told him/her what to do, feel, or how to move. They are also learning how the liver and stomach work.
Fantasy corner
The fantasy corner turned into a doctor’s office where the children give each other check-ups using the medical instruments, prescribe medicine, give injections, and make phone calls and appointments.
Readathon week
The readathon was fun! We made books, colored books, story telling, acted out short stories, and had extra story time. Griselda talked about the history of Cinco de Mayo and why we celebrate it. She also shared some stories of her childhood about living in a farm and how children could play together and have lots of fun without toys. We closed with the special reading all day with all the wonderful volunteers!
Families visiting/volunteering
We had four family visits in the last two weeks!! Joshua, Aliyah’s dad, talked about Ultimate Frisbee. Everybody had a turn to throw and catch the frisbee on the grass area. He then showed us how to play Ultimate Frisbee. At the end, they crafted frisbees with recycled paper plates and stickers. They loved both making and playing with their own frisbees!
Kelly and Oscar, Guy’s parents, brought in a science project. They provided the children with trays, tools, corn starch, water, and food coloring, and then the fun started! They mixed everything until the mixture had a consistency that allowed the children to manipulate and play with. It was a well organized fun mess!
Mike, Paige’s dad shared the signage business he and his wife Paula run together. He brought in a few samples of signs they have made, talked about what they were for, and told us how some of them were made using lasers. Mike gave the children stickers of their names for them to color and take home. He also brought a beautiful real oak wood sign that said “Live Oak” and gifted it to the classroom. We love it and it’s proudly displayed on the shelf!
Portia, Phoenix’s mom joined us for sharing circle and part of the morning work period. We can tell the four families and students had a great time!
Traveling Scholars
We hosted two students from the Mariposa classroom–Leyla and Parker. They had a great time playing with the dollhouse and the human body kit. From our class, Henry and Agata spent the morning work period in the Mariposa classroom.
