Beautiful Brown

We have honored the black heritage history month by presenting people of color who made a difference in the world with their kindness and courage. Our first one was Martin Luther King. The students were very interested in hearing about Dr. King’s life; how he showed his courage in a peaceful way, using his words. We introduce this unit by reading the Live Oak teacher’s favorite book, “Brown: The Many Shades of Love” donated by Erika, Lucca’s mom. Thank you Erika! We also introduced Habiba, a teacher from Africa who has created a program to keep  girls at school and delay marriage. (Centre of Girls for Education). This program serves the poorest girls in North of Nigeria. The CGE is serving more than 100 thousands girls (preschool to High school).

Art

After the break, the children explored mixing primary and secondary colors with white and black tempera paint. Brightest/bold to lightest and brightest/bold to darkest. They enjoyed discovering all the color shades they made with only two colors. Beside reading the book “Brown: The Many Shades of Love”, we exposed the children to more books that talk about different skin colors, and we decided to make our very own shades of brown. They loved mixing colors together (primary, white, and black). They created many shades of brown, and named each one; Milk Chocolate, Brownie, Cinnamon, Honey, Strawberries With Cream, Peaches and Cream, Coffee with Milk, Vanilla. We used the shades we mixed to create different art projects.

Geography

We continue working on land and water forms. After presenting the peninsula and the gulf in the classroom, the students asked to make them in the sandbox. Geography lessons in the sandbox are the children’s favorite.

Science

Our class loves observing reactions by mixing liquids and solids. The volcano, science table, and magnet works are still very popular! Also, the children enjoyed two new science projects; the walking water experiments using a long paper towel, and the flower experiment observing white flowers absorbing food coloring.

Fantasy corner

Our fantasy corner turned into a very busy kitchen, mostly by the younger group. They love cooking with his peers and feeding their friends and teachers.

Sensory Bin

The float and sink work became very popular, so we made it bigger using the sensory bin.
