Happy Lunar New Year!!!

We were so Lucky to have two parents participating during the New Lunar Year week. Kelly, Ruby G’s mom, began the week with a beautiful presentation on this celebration. She read a few books where we learned many different traditions and ways people celebrate the Lunar New Year around the world. Also, she shared a Leggo display that showed how people prepare to receive and celebrate the Lunar New year. She also handed the traditional red envelopes and fresh tangerines. Jill, Arlo’s mom, lead the lantern project with our class.

Many thanks to both of them!

The Year of the Snake

The children loved painting, drawing and molding snakes. We also invited Lamar, the admission director from the UAC, to share his two pet snakes. The children loved meeting and learning about his two reptiles. We were surprised that no child was afraid of them and they even petted them!

Lion Dance

The Lion dance was part of our daily activities and they loved the music and the dance. Everybody had a turn to lead the dance.

Here are some pictures and a video for you to enjoy.

Noodles

We learned that one of the many foods they eat on Lunar new year is noodles, which represent longevity and prosperity. To honor this tradition, we cooked and had a taste of long noodles to close the week.

Valentine week

Our sensory bin turned into Valentine treasures, and the students loved exploring all the new Valentine projects and works in our art and practical life shelves.

Valentines Seahorses

In addition to the Valentine swap, everybody got an extra Valentine. Natalie, Esmeralda’s mom made the cutest seahorses with a little heart in it’s pouch for each student. It was an amazing handmade work and the children love them so much that they rested/napped holding them.

Cooking project

To celebrate Valentine’s day we made brownies! A delicious recipe from scratch. The cooking team were Esmeralda, Micah, and Bea. They had a great time mixing and smelling the chocolate!

Traveling scholars

Our travelers to Cedar these weeks were Felix and Neela. We hosted Leo and Summit.

Art

Kelly, Ruby G’s mom, brought some tangerines for everyone for Lunar New Year. She told us how tangerines, oranges and pomelos are thought to bring prosperity and good fortune in the coming year. The children enjoyed observing and handling the tangerines, and were inspired to create still-life art from them. Finally, they enjoyed eating them!

The children enjoyed making pastel Valentine colors by mixing primary and secondary colors with white paint.
