North America

The Live Oak students enjoyed learning about Mexico, Canada, and the United States. They identified these countries on a big map. In small groups, they worked on projects related to these countries; coloring or painting maps, crafting flags, and their favorite one was making corn tortillas. In this cooking project, everybody had the opportunity to make their own tortillas, and it turned into a bean taco party.

Verena, Josie’s mom, gave a presentation about Canada, where Josie was born. She talked about the weather, showed beautiful pictures of snowy places, and even a real igloo. After her wonderful presentation, the students were inspired and colored many Canada maps, crafted Canadian flags, and asked the teachers to do a parade holding their flags with pride.

In a group, we invited the children to talk about The United States, language, food and holidays. Interest in the North America unit started fading out, and got taken over by Valentine’s Day once we started decorating everyone’s bags.

Who is Isaac?

Isaac is a former Live Oak student. He was here in 2010. He is now a senior in high school, and is volunteering in our classroom for his internship. The children love him! He plays with them outside, does projects with them, helps during nap time, and reads books. He is a big help and we are happy to have him!

Geography

We continue with the land and water forms. These weeks we added a cape. When the weather allows us, we take this activity into the sandbox, where the children make the water/land we are working on. Building land and water forms in the sandbox is a great activity where we see a collaboration between the students and best of all they have a lot of fun.

Fantasy corner and sensory bin

These stations are great for socializing and practicing sharing materials, waiting for a turn and creating symbolic games where the children represent different characters.

Art

After seeing how much the students enjoyed mixing the primary colors using chalk pastels with Julianne, we continued exploring the color theory with tempera. The children were fascinated with creating new colors. It was so great hearing their excited comments, “I made green!”, “I made orange!”, “I made brown!”. All the paintings were beautiful! Another beautiful project was a still life of flowers using oil pastels, inspired by a bouquet of fresh flowers donated by Jill, Arlo’s mom.

Marshall and Quinn started an interesting craft using tape and construction paper that inspired the teachers to create a three dimensional project. It was very popular and it was so great to see all the children’s creations!

Getting ready for Valentines

Jill, Arlo’s mom, came to help the children decorate their Valentine’s bags. They are ready to be filled with your children’s Valentines.
