Hi Magnolia Families! Welcome to our blog. These last few weeks in Magnolia have been filled with all kinds of books, projects, experiments and lessons about color. Primary colors…secondary colors…even tertiary colors! We discovered something very interesting: when you mix the three primary colors together you create Beautiful Brown! Check out some of the ways we’ve experienced the beauty in brown.

Beautiful Brown
Learn How to Make Beautiful Brown!
Here’s a video that teacher Emily made during home learning a few years ago. Let’s see what happens when we mix Yellow, Blue, and Red to create Beautiful Brown!
Here’s what you’ll need if you’d like to follow along with Emily:
- Piece of Paper (any kind)
- Paintbrush
- Yellow, Blue, and Red from your Beautiful Brown kit
- A small dish of water and a paper towel to dry your brush
Experiencing Beautiful Brown With Our Senses
Teachers created opportunities for friends to experience the sight, smell, sound and feeling of Beautiful Brown. Mitra put together a fascinating activity that invites us to match the smell of various brown foods, such as ground cinnamon, ground coffee and cocoa powder to their whole parts (cinnamon sticks, whole coffee beans and a dark chocolate square.)
One activity invites us to feel Beautiful Brown. Some items are soft, rough, gritty or smooth. Friends were invited to look closely at a small collection of Beautiful Brown in jars (feathers, pasta, wooden beads, soil) and even shake them up to hear the sounds they make.
Around Magnolia
Thank you Jill (Hana’s Mom) for joining us to celebrate a special day in Japan every May 5th: Children’s Day! Children’s Day in Japan is all about celebrating children. Jill and Hana presented carp streamers (Koinobori) and brought origami paper for Magnolia friends to fold, along with a special gifts for the children.
Julianne joined us this week and created beautiful oil pastel drawings with the children. Families will receive a special wrapped gift on Friday which can be given to Mom on Mother’s day or any family member to share their love!
