Greetings Mariposa,

We have had so much fun in class and it’s great to see all the growth that has happened with all the children and how engaged they continue to be.  The children are doing great with their take home letter collages and presenting about them.  We have enjoyed various cooking projects and various special guests over past few weeks.

In celebration of Lunar New Year and our sound study ‘S’, we did lots of crafts and participated in our school Lunar New Year parade. The children created various art around snakes for this years Year of the Snake. Our class also had a special visitor, Lamar ;who works at the UAC campus and is the Director of Admissions and K-5 Dean of Students . Lamar brought in his pet snakes to share with us and tell us all about them. Many children were excited to learn about the snakes, to see them and even pet them gently with one finger. We wrote thank you notes  for Lamar and sent him our cards. Thank you Lamar for sharing your snakes with us !

In our sound studies the children continue to be very engaged and excited as we are coming close to the end of the alphabet. We have studied letters R,S and T. There has been an increase in cooking projects; from fried Rice to tie in with our R week to a mini Taco party for this weeks letter T !

In honor of Black History Month we continue learn about many African American heroes that have impacted our community and influenced our collective culture, globally and locally.  We learned and read books not only about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, but also learned  about Nina Simone and listened to some of her songs ( which are now on our classroom dance playlist). We also learned about Muhammed Ali and his influence in boxing, Maya Angelou and her influence in writing and literature and Sylvia Townsend; who opened a dance studio right here in our own back yard in Richmond CA.

In art with Julianne, we learned about William H. Johnson  who was a Black American painter and the children created their still life images of flowers inspired by his work and his style.

The children enjoyed passing out their kindness treats and cards to each other and enjoyed making various  art in our maker space.

Thank you for returning all library card applications. The children are looking forward to our library field trip on the 28th.

Thank you all for your continued support!

Warmly,

Mariposa Teachers
