Good morning!

*The weekend got away from me, but going forward you can expect a blog post at least twice a month. The blog will be used for photos and glimpses into our time together. ParentSquare will be for action items or information for the whole class. Email is for communication between us – a check in, a quick aside, the more personal stuff, etc.*

“A day without a friend is like a pot without a single drop of honey left inside.” – Winnie the Pooh, A.A. Milne.

Don’t let the chalkboard sign fool you; these sweet photos were really taken on the second day of school! One of the most important skills in the kindergarten classroom is flexibility! Pictures didn’t work out for the first day? No need to stress or fuss, we’ll try again tomorrow…and so we did and here we are. You’ll notice one little kindergartner circa 1974 on her first day of kindergarten, and our friend Humphrey, too. You’ll also notice one friend who has been away, but joining us soon! I’ll update when he arrives.

We’re a small, but mighty, class! We especially love playing Beat the Robot and Roll the Dice, laughing together at nonsense, and Sketch Book Siesta.

What did we do during those first few days together? It might be easier to tell you what we didn’t do, but I’ll give it a go. Take a look at some candid shots from our first week together:

We invited our families in to celebrate the first day of school. We read a story, sang together, and checked in on everyone’s feelings.

We learned how to play Roll and Record; you’ll hear more about how we teach Math in kindergarten at Back to School Night on September 21st.

We had our first Art class with Julianne. She taught us about Pointillism and we made observational paintings with liquid watercolors.

We met Humphrey!

Last week was all about routines – here we are learning about different materials, different letter sounds, starting our visual journals, making choices during Choice Time and recess, working in our Poetry and Song Books, playing Roll the Dice, exploring math tools, voting, observing the monarchs, we started our first chapter book, are trying to crack the calendar code during Number Corner, competed in the Friday table challenge, had PE with Craig and Health class with Stephen, learned about tallies and 10 frames and that’s just the tip of the iceberg!

We watched this video about Monarch butterflies and will begin our study of insects and bugs this week. We marveled at that hummingbird drone.

Here’s to a year of friendship and all the stuff that comes with it!

Questions, comments, concerns, compliments? I’ll take them all – be well,

Danette
