Brainstorming highlights of the week for our weekly reflections, and math games for choice time after.
Our excitement about math is multiplying! This week we launched into our math unit on multiplication. We tied in our everyday connections by brainstorming items that come in groups and used these lists to work out multiplication story problems and make up our own. Try this at home using the following template: There are _____. Each _____ has _____. How many _____ are there in all? We also played many math games including Buzz and Guess My Number. Many students shared these games with their grown ups Friday morning.
In reading workshop we continue to be active readers by discussing and practicing third grade reading skills. We also came up with guidelines on how to write a book review in third grade. Sharing our book recommendations is a great way to connect and become a tight community of readers. In writing workshop we continued to zoom in on our descriptive writing and our world-traveling friend shared his own descriptive piece which helped us to see, hear, and feel where he is. Ask your child where in the world our friend is and what he/she remembers about his location on the globe. We continue our beloved Peter Pan read aloud and enjoy predicting, visualizing, connecting, and questioning together. In cursive we are gaining momentum and are seeing real progress.
After a landform demonstration, students went through a glossary of landforms and bodies of water vocabulary and identified which can be found locally with the help of a map. We ended the week with Super Art and Science centers where we conducted chromatography experiments with leaves and markers, and we had a special visit from our very own expert chef, Julie, who led the class in turning a plant part into a tasty treat (hummus). Thank you to Julie and Julianne for sharing your talents and being a super part of this highlight of our week.
Third graders have been matched up with their seventh grade buddies and met them on Friday. We will start the week designing and carving our pumpkins as we get to know our buddies. The pumpkins will also be a part of our math as we estimate and calculate, and then try to decide what Zone our jack-o-lanterns are in. Thank you for bringing in pumpkins and book orders. Look for a field trip form going home on Monday.
