In math we continue our multiplication work by building arrays in a “Ways to Arrange _____ Chairs” activity. We revisited a favorite math game called Real Estate Math that builds arrays and gets us thinking about the relationship between repeated addition and multiplication. It is also getting us ready for perimeter . . . students should start practicing multiplication facts at home. Look for triangle flashcards next week. In addition to flashcards, other ways to practice include:

~Creating chants and songs for skip counting (3, 6, 9 . . . ) and facts (3×1=3, 3×2=6)

~Filling in multiplication charts

~Good old fashioned worksheets

~New fangled online games, apps, and timed tests

Please start helping your child practice nightly for 5-10 minutes. The goal for third grade is to memorize multiplication facts from 1-10 by the end of the year. A flashcard strategy is to for your child to quiz him/herself by covering the product (answer to the multiplication problem) or to have a grown-up or friend quiz them and then place the cards in two piles: ones answered correctly and quickly, and triangle cards to continue to work on.

In writing and mindfulness we focused on what we are thankful for and brainstormed categories we all have in common: family, friends, nature, food, life, clean water, school, people, fun activities, creativity, myself, air, books, and life! Then each student chose three categories they are most thankful for and then listed all the specific details that go with it. For example, if you chose food then you would list your favorite food, recipes, restaurants, and other details like who cooks for you. We also explained WHY we are thankful for each. Next we will start the introduction for our five-paragraph expository using a graphic organizer to keep us on track. We will also be weaving in transition words that tie our pieces together.

Students have been meeting one on one with Lisa, Julia, Katherine, and Stephen for individual reading assessment. Continue to read with your child at home and have conversations that connect with the main characters and storyline. Pause as you read to predict, make connections, summarize, visualize, and ask questions.

The Temescalians worked hard on their Spanish Halloween pumpkin skit and were thrilled to perform for the sweet Sweet Briar Creekers and Bliss. After the performances, the actor and actresses took questions and received compliments. The energy and effort put into practicing and props really showed and one audience member complimented them on their pronunciation and accents. Well done, Temescalians!

Thank you parents for cheering on the Halloween parade, bringing yummy treats, and helping with the Halloween centers. We had a blast and enjoyed the holiday in spite of the rain!

We look forward to meeting with parents for conferences on Monday and Tuesday! Also, our field trip to the Oakland Museum of California is on Thursday. Don’t forget to send your child to school with a portable lunch. Thank you to the parents who volunteered to drive and chaperone!
