Last week was full of anticipation as we wrapped up our pieces for the Art Show, as well as our research books for our Celebration of Learning. Thank you parents who came on Thursday night AND Friday morning to appreciate all of the hard work by our artists, scientists, writers, and amazing human beings!

After the Art Show opening, the Temescalians returned Friday morning to take a closer look and to do a See, Think, Wonder thinking routine and sketch. Thank you again, Julianne, for your guidance and hard work!

Writing workshop this week focused on editing, typing, and getting our research into published form. After the main sections were complete, students had the opportunity to write and illustrate “extras” for their non-fictions books including a glossary, index, about the author pages, life cycle diagrams, quizzes, bulleted facts, and more! We started off the week with a Rocket Write, and also sorted and wrote spelling patterns for Words Their Way.

Drafting questions for Mitali Perkins.

We finished our interactive read aloud, Rickshaw Girl, to prepare for the author visiting TBS next week. As we read we collected vocabulary words, and then we summarized the storyline, brainstormed questions for the author, and visualized. The Temescalians are super excited and prepared to meet author, Mitali Perkins, on Wednesday. For the Read-a-thon we will be exploring and charting genres.

In math we finished our unit on data collection and representation, and will continue to work on how to engage with and draw conclusions from a variety of graphs. Next week we start our study of measurement, area, and perimeter.

Our science has been integrated with writing as we take on the point-of-view of our plant an animals and explore how they are all connected in the food web in our local ecosystems. As a tie in with cultural studies, we are going to have a design-build challenge of making our shelters inspired by the Ohlone from local, abundant, and natural materials like plants and rocks.

Thursday—Book Swap:

Temescalians will visit the book swap on Thursday to find that one book that calls out to them to bring home . . . if you have like-new books to donate for this favorite event please send them in before then. Books may be donated curbside during drop-off at the UAC Tuesday, March 31 through Thursday, April 2. You may also drop off books in the school office anytime until Thursday morning. Books that are not claimed during the Swap will be donated to the Children’s Book Project.

Friday—Readathon:
Temescalians are welcome to come in their comfy PJs and bring in a stuffy and/or pillow to help snuggle into a full day of reading in the classroom. Please make sure books from home and all other special items are labeled with names. Grown ups are welcome to join in the fun and read alongside the Temescalians. Email teachers if you have a special read aloud in mind and we will schedule you in. Thanks for helping us keep the focus on reading and our readers. This day is always such a mellow and magical day of reading and perfect way to kick off spring break!

Mindful walking activity in Temescal.

We are grateful for our moments of mindfulness and are seeing how it really pays off to practice paying attention to the moment without judgement. On Monday we started off the week with a mindful walking game, and also tried our being mindful seers and listeners. Third graders are really articulate about their observations and reflections!
We topped off the week with some well-earned choice time!
