Students received their local ecosystem assignment for the 1,000s project and began brainstorming and planning at school. Please remember that they are individual projects, and that family member are welcome to help their Temescalian along the way as they learn more about the bay, grasslands, woodlands, or wetlands in our area. Projects are due to be carried into the classroom the morning of Tuesday, February 23.

In math we continued to work on fractions and went more in depth by exploring fractions on a number line and equivalent fractions. We also practiced multiplication facts through Multiplication Bingo with the help of our laminated pocket-sized multiplication charts.

We have been working on how to Speak Up and Get Along since mid-November in Temescal Creek by learning many social and emotional tools and role playing scenarios. We also have been documenting in our “Good Things Journal” daily. All of this work has prepared us for Friendship Week! As a class we came up with all of the ways to be a great secret pal, and we also talked about the positive ripple effect of kind words and deeds. Students are excited about participating in the Kindness Game, which focuses on ways to be kind to others, and ourselves!

Getting to know you . . .

We read more about the lives of Ohlone children and took notes with important facts on white boards. The next day we took these words and phrases and wrote structured paragraph showing what we learned. We focused on indenting, starting with a topic sentence, including at least three supporting facts, and summing up with a concluding sentence. This is preparing us for our upcoming research project on local plants and animals. We also created our own game that Ohlone children played, called Staves, which involves six decorated flat sticks. Ask your child how to play this game if you didn’t get introduced to it yet!

Reading workshop and word work . . .

After a visit from some of the Temescal grown ups last Friday, we went to an all-school assembly in the depot. We enjoyed a showcase of learning by sixth graders, which was a video they produced showing what they have been up to upstairs. We also sang a song about Dr. Martin Luther King, and watched a skit about how to be more inclusive and respectful at TBS.

Remember we are heading to the San Francisco Symphony via BART on Wednesday, so children should come prepared to walk and have a packed lunch and water bottle ready for our cultural adventure in the city!
