We look forward to seeing you all for the TBS annual K-5 Spring Sing. Call time is 6:40 in the classroom and the performance will begin at 7:00. Temescalians should wear blue!
Julianne and Emily been teaching the third grade artists about the technique of painting, pointillism, and they tried it out on card making for Mother’s Day and for other special ladies in our lives. Flowers in jars and and vases were our inspiration.
In math we started our unit on measurement, perimeter, and area. We figured out how to use our hands to help us estimate measurement. Some noticed the width of their pink or index finger was about a centimeter, the width of two fingers equals an inch for many, and knowing the length of your hand span can really come in handy. A parent on a tour of TBS was really impressed with their work and said he uses his “Handy Measuring Tool” every day. Can you guess his profession? Your Temescalian knows the answer . . .
We are getting to the final publishing stage of our local research writing and illustrating! After editing and revising independently, with a partner, and then one-on-one with a teacher, Temescalians started typing on Chromebooks. Next week we will start a two-week unit on typing led by Susan, which will be a foundation for continued typing instruction in 4/5.
For Information Literacy, Rebecca led the third graders in reading and analyzing a news article about a change in rules to the national spelling bee. We will continue this work and then learn about the Dewey Decimal System.
Temescal’s Showcase of Learning for the All-School Assembly was a huge success! We presented what we have learned this year about local ecosystems, the Ohlone people who lived along the coast and wetlands, and how we only have 10% of the original California wetlands left. Rain gardens help by serving as mini wetlands and we talked about how we have been learning and caring for our own rain garden on campus. Middle Schoolers presented their experiences with service learning and We Day.
We will present the slideshow from the assembly again, as well as our published research books, at our end-of-the-year publishing party/celebration of learning on Monday, June 6, at 8:30-10:15 am.
Other upcoming events include the Walkathon on Thursday, June 2. Please consider volunteering and/or cheering us on! The very next day is Beach Day (Friday, June 3). Let us know if you would like to join us for a morning at Alameda Crown Beach and think warm and sunny thoughts . . .
