We finished up our first week with a few introductions from our Core Arts teachers. Julianne and Emily, our teaching artist and art intern/ExDay teacher, showed us the art they create and talked about their own process to making art. It is inspiring to see the art that our teaching artists create and know that the act of making art never stops. Owen and Sammy, our music teacher and music intern/ExDay teacher, introduced themselves and taught us a few songs.
Kate Klaire, our student life coordinator, came by and shared her favorite song, “If I Had a Hammer” with us. Big thanks to Owen for sharing his musical talents too!
We had our first Family Reading Friday, albeit truncated, and it was lovely to see the excitement as the Temescalians showed their grownups around the classroom and hear the buzz of the Temescalians reading to their grownups.
Our new 6th graders led us in a moment of meditation at our first assembly of the year. Assemblies are a time that the whole University Avenue campus gathers together as a community and shares learning that we are doing in our classes. Assemblies usually happen on the first Friday of the month, from 850-9:30am.
We had our first Super Science and Art day and the focus was on magnets and compasses. We try to give Temescalians time and space to “mess around” and interact with aspects of science and engineering. Keeping NGSS standards and methods in mind, we try to give Temescalians an opportunity to put what they know to the test, to think critically, and make connections. This unit on magnets and compasses connects to our study of maps and thinking about where we are in the world.
A brief foray into math involved number sense and the 100 chart. Given clues, Temescalians crossed out numbers that fit the description.
We have an update on the annual trip to Lake Anza. Due to high algae levels, Tilden Park has closed the lake to swimming. With this in mind, we have cancelled the field trip to Lake Anza this year, but we have many other field trips planned for this year! We will be asking for parent drivers for some of those field trips, so please make sure that your insurance and driver’s license information is up to date with Chris at the front desk!
Finally, if you haven’t already, please be sure to fill out our Dismissal Arrangements form so we know who’s permitted and not permitted to pick up your child.
Thank you so much, and we’ll see you tomorrow!
