See you soon!
As a part of our FOSS unit on motion and matter, we embarked on a magnet exploration last week culminating with our Super Science and Art time on Friday afternoon. Julianne showed us videos of amazing art sculptures in motion that use magnetism. Then we interacted with simple materials that produced amazing results! We observed magnets as they attracted and repelled and were wowed by paperclips levitating and magnets hovering. Gravity is also pulling all objects toward the center of the earth, which acts like a huge magnet. Ask your child what his/her/their favorite magnet activity was on the checklist.
In math, we wrapped up the April calendar that showcased an equivalent fraction pattern. We also continued our fraction work with geoboards and identified fractions in quilt designs with geometric patterning. Unit 6 was wrapped up with a “show what you know” assessment, and we moved into our end-of-the-year Comprehensive Growth Assessment.
The students from California College of Art (CCA) came in for their last visit and presented their final products. These hands-on and gorgeous interactive Ohlone games were gifted to us and will be used for years to come to help teach third grade cultural studies. Temescalians were especially thrilled to see themselves in the Power Point and video portions of the presentations. Special thanks to Sima and TBS parent, Basak, from CCA, who brought the students in and oversaw the process.
During our Friday morning time with grown ups we made dip from fava beans harvested from the back garden. While shelling the beans we found a tiny slug that was released back into nature. Now that’s farm to table! Temescalians also read and looked through portfolios during this time. Our next Friday morning time with grown ups is May 25, which will end a little early due to an assembly that follows. We hope to see you then!
We celebrated Julianne on her birthday which was May 4th (“May the fourth be with you!”) and a Temescalian’s birthday earlier in the week. Oh how we love birthdays!
Our research writing on local animals continues and we are deep into the drafting stage of the process. We continue to free journal through our Rocket Write time and enjoy learning about each other by sharing.
Students from 1/2 came into Temescal and announced a collection drive for the homeless. A poster with more information is on the front door of our classroom. Thank you in advance for contributing!
We have enough drivers and chaperones for our Save the Bay field trip with our 7th grade buddies on Wednesday, May 16th. Thank you!
