Homework! We just sent home our first homework packets of the year. We’ll be sending these home on Monday (or Tuesday if there’s no school on Monday). The cover sheet will have the things that they need to complete throughout the week. Usually, the workload consists of:
– Reading: 20 minutes a day and filling in a reading log with an active reading skill.
– Math: Practice multiplication facts. (Try to focus on one fact family at a time, then mix it up!) 1-2 worksheets that follow up the material taught in class.
– Grammar/punctuation: 1 sheet.
– Spelling packet: Includes the set of words for the week and sight words. Temescalians need to complete two activities from the menu and be prepared for a Spelling Check on Friday.
This seems like a lot, but depending on your schedule, you could double up and read for 1 hr and effectively complete 3 days’ worth of reading. You could do all of the math work for the week on a single day. You can mix and match, as long as all components are completed by Friday. The Temescalian will bring his/her homework packet in his/her Friday folder and turn it in on Friday. We’ll put the Weekly Reflection in the folder on Friday, grownups will write a note and return it on Monday, and the whole cycle will restart all over again!
As with new things, there may be some growing pains, but we are here to help! If your Temescalian is having a hard time with the work or the work is taking longer than 20 minutes of reading and 25 minutes of work, then stop for that work time and let us know! We’re talking the Temescalians through this routine in class, but always let us know what you’re hearing at home too! Temescalians are welcome to join Homework Club in ExDay if you’d like. It usually runs for 40 minutes. A quiet space will be provided for kids to get their homework done before they even get home! If you would like your Temescalian to join Homework Club, check in with Catherine DeVuono in ExDay.
