With Memorial Day, this was a short week, especially since we had our Walkathon on Thursday and Beach Day on Friday.
We started the week with the annual 8th grade repurposed fashion show. 8th graders used reclaimed items to create outfits that reflected their design and aesthetic. Some re-used existing clothing in different ways such as using the legs of khaki shorts as sleeves on a jean vest while others used grocery bags to create a pleated dress, and plastic bags sewn on a bodice to create new looks. This K-8 experience is one that all grade levels look forward to each year, and we always marvel at the creativity, ingenuity, and fanfare that is involved in this fashion show.
We had a geometry checkpoint, and we reflected on what we know about polygons and quadrilaterals. Defining exactly what makes different quadrilaterals unique can be a challenging thing, but necessary, especially when trying to differentiate between quadrilaterals. For example, a square, rhombus, and rectangle are all considered parallelograms whereas a square is not the same as a rhombus because of the type of angles it has. Also, a square is a type of rectangle, but rectangle is not ever a type of square.
Temescalians are almost ready for you to come and read their final Local Animal Research books on Tuesday! They spent much of last week typing, editing, illustrating, defining, and publishing their works. Our Celebration of Learning and End of the Year Potluck is on Tuesday, June 4 from 8:45 – 10:30am. We hope that you can all make it! (The potluck sign up is at the top of this page. Please click on the button to see what still is needed for the potluck.)
Our Walkathon this year was focused on ending homelessness in Berkeley. Our shirts: Every Bee Needs a Hive reflects our thinking that all members of a community need to be recognized and incorporated into the whole. K-8 walked along University Ave. to create awareness that this is something that is important to our school, and there were many people along the way who showed support by coming out of stores and honking horns. We all made our way to the ECC and quenched our thirst with some homemade lemonade. The K-3 then went to Ohlone Park where we assembled hygiene kits for those who may need them. (Thank you for your donations of shampoo, wipes, hand sanitizer, sanitary napkins, razors, socks, and snack bars!) The 4-8 graders continued their walk to MLK Park where they had a rally, raising awareness of what’s going on in Berkeley, what can be done, and heard from Berkeley City council members who shared their perspective about what can be done. We all came back together in Ohlone Park for a field day filled with organized games, as well as limbo, bubble making, and free play.

Field Day at the park!
We celebrated Jackie’s summer birthday a bit early. She had so many pictures of when she was little! It was great seeing a younger version of Jackie and hear more about her when she was little!
We ended the week with Beach Day at Crown Beach in Alameda. It started out a bit chilly, but the fog burned off and the sun came out and it turned out to be a wonderful day at the beach!
It is our last week of school this week!
A few reminders are for Temescalians:
– bring in a labeled reusable/sturdy grocery bag or two so that we can send home items from cubbies and such.
– no ExDay on Thursday, June 6!
– check Newsnotes for recommended summer resources
