Hello Temescal Families,

We had a full and exciting week together in 3rd grade;  From a birthday celebration to carving pumpkins and ending with a field trip, it was non-stop fun.  Peek at the festivities in the photos below.

On Thursday night from 6:00-7:30, we welcome you all to our class for Math Night.  Our main goals for this special event are as follows:

  • Help parents understand how their child understands math and how we think about and teach math at our school
  • For students to share the joy of math with their parenting adults
  • By partnering, families and teachers can better support student math learning all year long

We will be playing a favorite math game called SKUNK, from 6:30-7:00.  We hope to see you there.

Our next field trip will be to The Oakland Museum of California on November 14th.  Volunteer sign-up sheets are on the horizon.  Please join us if you can.

We hope you have had a restful and rejuvenating weekend.

In community,

Emily and Jackie

Planning for pumpkin carving

Here we are digging out the pulp and seeds.  Thank you to Rachel and Adam for pitching in to help with the goop!

The final products!  Creativity and teamwork were evident throughout the afternoon. Thank you to August, Adam, David, and Wendy for sharing your carving expertise!

The costumes in the 3rd grade were amazing.  It was a very brief costume reveal and parade, but we LOVED seeing the kids all dressed up.  Thank you to Caitlin, Gazelle, and Wendy for helping the kids get back into their school clothes.

After the parade, we did Halloween stations.  We made ‘squishies,’ bats, and worked on word searches. Thank you to Ricardo, Eliyahu, Wendy, Araxi, and Rebecca for pitching in and making it all possible.  It was lovely to get a chance to connect and have fun.

We took a trip upstairs to the ‘Haunted Laboratory,’ hosted by Middle School students and their teacher Jeff.  This was a big hit with everyone, adults included.  Kids held cockroaches, tested to see if Jackie is a witch (she isn’t!), watched soda cans implode, and made ghostly sounds with balloons and cups.

After lunch, we watched a video and ate popcorn.  The roasted pumpkin seeds got a thumbs up.

Lisa, teacher extraordinaire and new mom, surprised us with a pop-in visit!  We all got to swoon over baby Addie and tickle her feet.

On Friday we took a trip to the Paramount Theater in downtown Oakland.  The BART ride provided many life lessons and gave us a small taste of a topic we’ll cover soon- maps. The show was inspiring and full of art and beauty.  The music style changed throughout the show.  Our class enjoyed hip-hop music the most.  We couldn’t have done it without our excellent chaperones, Basak, Leanne, September, and Jeannie.  Thank you!

Amidst all of the Halloween-ing, this Pokemon loving kiddo turned 8.  Thanks for sharing your read aloud,  baby photos and Japanese popsicles with us.  We wish you a year full of happiness and discovery!
