Hello Families,

Between finishing up our writing unit, getting Ohlone research underway, and having a special coding activity, we have been busy in Temescal Creek!  We hope to see many of you at Winter Sing this Friday (parent breakfast 8:30-9:15/performance 9:15-10:15) followed by our classroom Celebration of Learning (10:15-10:45).  As always, if you cannot make it, we can arrange for a time that does work for your schedule.

Here are some highlights from our week of learning~

Math:  Measuring in centimeters around our classroom, learning about fractions on Dreambox, mastering our multiplication facts, and learning to break up arrays into smaller, more manageable problems to calculate area.

Writing:  Completing final drafts, learning to self-edit and peer edit, using the dictionary to look up misspelled words, and conferencing with teachers.

Super Science and Art:  Drawing a compass rose, learning about cardinal directions,  and map-making.

From the desk of Julianne:
We’ve been working with the idea of “Place.” 1310 University Avenue is where we spend our days together at school. We are making connections with maps of the Bay Area and Ohlone people who first inhabited the land and the place where The Berkeley School sits. Art prompt this week was to create an Art Map inspired art piece using color paper and pencils and maps of Bay Area Indigenous people.
We also looked at images of public artwork located on 4th street in Berkeley. A poem and monumental wood paintings of Ohlone figures in regalia installed adjacent to the Shellmound site. We will be looking more closely at this public art and considering ways we may add to educating ourselves and our community about the Ohlone people.

The Berkeley School participated in The Hour of Code.  For many, this was their first coding experience using the program Scratch.  We think everyone enjoyed it! This from hourofcode.com:  Millions of students in more than 180 countries have played hundreds of tutorials in more than 45 languages so far this week—and it’s not over yet! Learning CS connects all the world’s students ❤️💻🌎 http://hourofcode.com

And Choice time for the win (always).

We hope you enjoyed your weekend.

We are looking forward to our last week together for 2019!

Warmly, Emily and Jackie
