Hello Families,
We started this shorter week with a scavenger hunt around the classroom for items that were specific lengths. We talked about how to use rulers and tape measures to accurately measure items, and shared back our findings. Did you know that the width of a door is the same as width as our little blue table in the classroom? We then worked together to use the number line strategy to add lengths together. See our Temescalians at work!

Continuing our study of water, and building up to learning about weather, we did a demonstration where we had cold water on top, with hot water underneath. We predicted that the water would mix together and create purple water. When we tried the demonstration again, but with the hot water on top and cold water below, we took predictions. Some Temescalians shared, “I think the water will mix again.” “I think that something different will happen because why else would you do the same experiment twice?” With the hot water on top, the hot water stayed separate! Upon further study, we learned that the density of the cold water was keeping the hot water from dropping down. Try this demonstration at home, or watch this video!

We celebrated a birthday! It’s so nice to learn about our fellow Temescalians, especially with their expert panel of family members to answer questions about them as younger people.

We continued partner reading and this week, we introduced the reading skill of finding connections as they read. They could connect the text to another text (text to text/T-T), connect the text to something they have experienced (text to self/ T-S), or connect the text to something happening in the world (text to world/T-W). As they read at home, check in with them to see if they are making connections as they read!

We had our first Family Reading Friday and it was so nice to enjoy time with families in the classroom! Families chose to play math games, look at different points in the classroom, and read together. If you are free to come, the next one will be in December, right before the Winter Break!

Scholastic Book Orders
Scholastic offers a wide array of books and as you purchase books for your Temescalian, you’ll be earning points that I can then use to bolster our classroom library. Growing up, I remember poring over the flyers sent home and emptying my piggy bank to purchase books for my own.
I sent home the flyer for 3rd graders, but if you check online, you can find flyers from other grade levels: https://clubs.scholastic.com/all-flyers/
Our class code is FMQ8F
The due date for orders this time is October 31.
Order books through our class page: https://orders.scholastic.com/FMQ8F
It may be easiest to create an account and order online and submit payment online. If you’d like to send in the paper order, please make checks payable to “Scholastic Book Clubs”.
To note, with a $25 order, you can pick a FREE $5 Book (use code: READS).
Happy book shopping!
