Hello Families,
Before I launch into a recap of November and the beginning of December’s happenings, I wanted to remind you of the Temescal Creek holiday potluck on Friday, 12/15 from 8:30 – 9:30am. Please click here for the potluck signup.
Also, please send in a cleaned 32oz. plastic soup container with the lid. (Please write your Temescalian’s name on that lid and the base of the container.)
We had many celebrations in November.
We celebrated birthdays, a Temescalian’s family shared about Diwali, we made rangoli, we cheered on the TBS bobcats basketball team, and Rosa shared with the UAC community about Hanukkah.
A Temescalian’s grownup came in to share about Diwali and led us in a rangoli art project involving sand and glue. Everyone’s creations were so intricate! We were also treated to a Diwali sweet that featured a cardamom flavor.
We celebrated the TBS Bobcat’s basketball season with a pep rally!
In Science we have talked about why leaves change color in the fall and it has a lot to do with the amount of sunlight that plants have and the amount of water that they receive in this season. As the chlorophyll dies, the colors that are naturally in the leaves are revealed. Carotenoids (oranges, yellows, and browns) are always in the leaf whereas anthocyanin (reds, pinks, and purples) are only in the leaves in the fall. We had a leaf chromatography experiment where we put leaves from different plants in their own rubbing alcohol bath and thus extracted the chlorophyll, carotenoids, and anthocyanins that were within the leaf.
We also talked about the different parts of the plant and what purpose it serves for the plant.
We welcomed VIPs onto campus. We showed them around the classroom and used a menu of activities to direct our time with them. Temescalians chose between playing math games, looking through portfolios, reading books, or working on the “folder extras” from our Thankfulness Writing project. It was so nice to connect with the greater TBS community and have the Temescalians spend time as guides of life as a 3rd graders at TBS.
We welcomed Jesús Sosa, an artisan from Oaxaca, Mexico who has come to the TBS campus for many years. He demonstrated how he carves alebrijes from wood and then decorates them. This year, each Temescalian was also able to decorate their own alebrije with traditional patterns.
Rosa welcomed us into the Depot to have a taste of Hanukkah. She had an assortment of menorah and hanukkia for us to look at, as well as dreidels to spin and donut holes to taste!
