Hi Temescalian families,

Here’s to another joyful week! From diving into multiplication strategies to exploring the role of wildfires in nature, and celebrating Lunar New Year, there was lots we explored! Here’s a little look at what we’ve been up to:

We kicked off our new math module on multiplication by exploring real-world situations that help students develop strategies for understanding multiplication in context. We began by examining arrays and reviewing familiar strategies like repeated addition and skip counting. We also introduced new ways of thinking, such as doubling to solve problems efficiently. One activity involved using stamps to determine the total value of whole sets. Practicing our math facts helps us builds a strong foundation for higher-level math concepts. To support this we’ve started our mornings with morning counting/rhymes to help us remember. Try it with your Temescalian and see if they have it down!

In science, we continued our study of wildfires, learning that while they are a natural disaster, they also play an essential role in regeneration and growth. We explored how fire helps certain plants and ecosystems thrive, including the giant sequoia, which actually depends on fire to grow! Check out the fascinating video we watched together: Why the Giant Sequoia Needs Fire to Grow.

This week, we had a wonderful opportunity to learn about Lunar New Year and how different cultures celebrate this special occasion. We also read about our own Chinese zodiac signs! A big thank you to Mona, Lando’s mom, who visited our class to share the tradition of red envelopes and lucky placards, which are placed at doors to bring good fortune and luck for the new year.

As always, thank you for your partnership, and please reach out if you’d like to bring any celebrations/traditions to our classroom!

Cheers,

Aly
