Catrina, by Jose Guadalupe Posada

A Celebration of Life and loved ones at The Berkeley School. Inspired by the Traditions of Mexico. Join us with our Community Ofrenda of family members.

Today, November 1st, is the first day of Dia de Los Muertos an annual holiday in Mexico celebrating ancestors on November 1 and 2nd. This year 2022, César, Gladys and I are coordinating our curriculum to teach and learn about Dia de los Muertos. At this time of year we invite our community to take some time to share stories with one another about family members. We want to hear your stories. We know sharing loss of family and friends can be sad and heartbreaking. We believe in story telling as a way of remembering them to others keeps and keeping them alive in our hearts. Please share what feels right for you. We want to take this time of year to know one another better by celebrating those who have died. It’s an opportunity to take some time to tell or retell the story of a family member that you would like to remember together. On the 1310 University campus we will be creating 3 ofrendas:

  1. In the Laurel Creek Spanish classroom – this is a community Ofrenda / Altera with an invitation to add a photo or multiple photos of loved ones.
  2. Sweet Briar Creek Kindergartners will create one in their classroom
  3. Art Studio – students will be creating a small one in the Eastern facing window.

We invite you to bring a copy of your family members’ photo to add to the Ofrenda. Please join us in this celebration of remembering, telling stories, and honoring those Ancestors who have gone before us. We plan to have the Spanish classroom Ofrenda up until Friday November 18, 2022.

Note: Please add the name of your loved one, dates of life, relation to the family, and child’s name plus classroom. This way we can get them back to you.
